When the stomach bug catches up to you

11 Feb

So, the past 18 hours have been a complete blur (I was sprinting away from the dreaded stomach bug that has plagued the neighborhood for the past two weeks, but it finally caught me).  In the light of a new day, still put off by the smells of cooking, I was in search of something to keep me from eating my kids Gorilla Munch all day long. I tried a plain version of the garlic and herb almond flour crackers from last week, and they have officially saved my day:

  • 2 cups almond flour
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt (plus a but for sprinkling)
  • 1 Tbsp melted butter
  • 1-2 Tbsp water (add slowly, just enough to form a dough)

Preheat oven to 350. Combine all ingredients and form into dough. Roll out on parchment lined baking sheet (for some reason I did not need to roll out between two sheets of parchment paper today, I suppose I added just the right amount of water so it wasn’t too sticky). Cut dough into desired cracker shapes, sprinkle with additional salt and bake for 8-10 minutes. Remove from oven, cool and break apart individual crackers. Enjoy! Your tummy will thank you!

Other snack ideas for when sickness plagues you:

  • Bone broth (I usually make a quick homemade broth each week with the leftovers from a rotisserie chicken and store in the fridge)
  • Add cooked plain chicken, carrots, or other veggies to the broth for a quick soup if you’re up to something a bit more solid
  • Cut up apples with a sprinkle of cinnamon and ginger
  • Variety of herbal teas
  • Sparkling water (the bubbles feel so good!)
  • Quick homemade ginger ale (not like from the soda shelf, but great if you love ginger!)
-In sauce pan combine: 1/4 cup water, 3 tsp dried ginger, 2 tsp raw honey
-Bring to a quick boil, stirring constantly
-Lower heat and let simmer for a few minutes, stirring occasionally
-Let cool and add spoonful at a time to sparkling water (or more, depending on flavor preference)

Sickness can be tough when you seem to crave non-primal snacks from your past like pretzels and saltines. If you’ve been eating clean for a while now though, the worst thing you can do is stray too far. It could potentially wreak havoc on your digestive system and make you worse for wear!

Here is to a happy and healthy weekend for all,

Heather
